Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Fiji Book Drive, 500 Seven Steps to Writing Success manuals and around 50,000 much-needed educational resources are about to arrive in Fijian schools and kindergartens.
A Tailored Approach
Since its inception, the Fiji Book Drive has donated over 348,000 books to 238 schools and kindergartens, supporting literacy and learning in communities that need it most.
Unlike traditional book donation initiatives, the organisation takes a ‘designed impact’ approach – carefully curating resources based on each school’s specific needs.
This ensures that students receive materials suited to their cultural context, academic level and language abilities, as English is often their second language.
The Driving Force Behind the Fiji Book Drive
At the heart of this initiative is Fiona Luth, a former English teacher and the passionate founder of the Fiji Book Drive.
Fiona personally selects educational materials, ensuring they are both appropriate and impactful. But her commitment goes far beyond logistics – she has undertaken gruelling journeys to deliver books to some of Fiji’s most remote communities.
One such journey to Nasauvere Primary School in Naitasiri required crossing the Wainimala River 26 times, an effort that underscores her unwavering dedication to bridging educational gaps, no matter the obstacles.
Powerful Partnerships Amplify Impact
The success of the Fiji Book Drive is fuelled by partnerships with organisations like Hinkler Books and Clayton Utz, whose support has been instrumental in securing resources and expanding the initiative’s reach. Under Fiona’s leadership, what began as a personal mission has grown into a formidable force for educational empowerment, fostering a love of reading and learning in Fijian schools.
Continuing the mission: One Book at a Time
Reflecting on her journey, Fiona acknowledges both the challenges and triumphs of running a charity. From facing decision fatigue to meeting incredible individuals, her experiences have only strengthened her resolve to make a lasting impact on Fijian education.
