Narrative Writing is all about connecting with others.
When a reader finishes a story, you want them to laugh or cry…or even sigh in wonder or despair!
Narrative Writing Prompts
Picture prompts for fun and quick writing practice to develop your students’ writing one technique at a time.
How to use these Writing Prompts
These writing prompts follow the Seven Steps methodology of breaking down writing into Seven simple Steps. By focusing on specific skills of writing, students rapidly practise and develop each skill, ultimately building on each one to write powerful whole texts. Shorter, more collaborative lessons help foster a more creative and fun writing classroom that students love!
What are the Seven Steps?
Learn the full theory at a Seven Steps Workshop.

Step 1: Plan for Success
Thinking is far more important than physically writing. To be original you need to have LOTS of ideas, so brainstorm and practise generating ideas often.

Step 2: Sizzling Starts
Start where the action is. Not at the beginning of the day where nothing is happening. Begin when the volcano starts oozing lava or as you walk into the big disco competition. Try Sizzling Starts for FREE >>

Step 3: Tightening Tensions
You must believe the hero will fail. The tornado is too strong, the villain is too evil, the black forces of depression are too overwhelming.

Step 4: Dynamic Dialogue
Think of dialogue as a mini play in the story. Let your characters walk, talk or even stalk – that’s how we get to know them.

Step 5: Show, Don’t Tell
Don’t tell me your villain is evil, have them kick a puppy and let me figure it out for myself.

Step 6: Ban the Boring
Everyone knows you sleep, eat and travel… so why write about it? Ban all mention of the ‘boring B’ words – bed, breakfast and bus trips.

Step 7: Exciting Endings
Want to stop all the “and then I woke up.” endings? Simple, figure out the ending before you start writing.
